The Tamil Nadu Assembly unanimously adopted a resolution on August 10, 2026, mandating that 'Tamil Thai Vazhthu' be sung first at all government and public institution events.
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay moved the resolution to preserve cultural identity, following a July 9, 2026, Union Home Ministry directive that suggested rendering 'Vande Mataram' at the start of functions.
The state song, written by Manonmaniam Sundaranar in 1891, was officially recognized by the DMK government on December 12, 2021, and remains a priority for the current administration.
