
Researchers from Stanford University and the Arc Institute used AI models to design 16 functional bacteriophages capable of infecting E. coli, potentially offering alternatives to traditional antibiotics.
The study, published in Science, involved synthesising nearly 300 AI-generated designs, with the successful phages effectively overcoming resistance to the naturally occurring virus ΦX174 in laboratory tests.
While the AI-designed viruses cannot infect humans, experts warn that the technology raises significant biosafety questions regarding the potential for future misuse in creating pathogens.
